BISHOP'S TRANSCRIPTS

Date of Creation:

1679-1866

Reference Code:

DW/T

From Collection:

DIOCESE OF WINCHESTER

Scope and Content:
  • The transcripts are contemporary copies of parish registers in the diocese. Post 1813 transcripts were written on printed forms. Each transcript may not be an exact copy of the register entry and may include entries which do not appear in the parish register. Where both sources exist they should be consulted together.
  • Within one month of Easter the churchwardens of each parish were compelled, under an Order in the Constitution of Canterbury of 1597, to send a copy of all baptism, marriage and burial register entries made in the previous year to the bishop. In 1603 it was laid down that the transcripts were to run from Lady Day (25 March).
