Simple Search Help
Use 'Search Terms' for a general search within the collections. You can enter a single word or phrase into this box.
If you wish to search for a single phrase such as "White City", ensure that 'All of these keywords' is selected. If you wish to search more widely choose 'Any of these keywords'. However, be aware that in the example above, this option will search for all records containing the word "White" and all records containing the word "City", such as "White Family" and "City of London".
Use the asterisk (*) wildcard to search across plurals or alternative wording for example the search term "Minute*" will return all items containing the word "Minutes" and also all items containing the phrase "Minute book"
If you know the Reference Code of an item or a collection you can enter it into the 'Reference Code' box.
TIP: If you want the search to return all the items in a particular collection, use the asterisk (*) wildcard. Adding * to the end of a reference code will give you all records whose Reference Code begins with that string of characters. For example entering just "LMA/4001" will return only the collection-level record with the reference "LMA/4001". Entering "LMA/4001*" will return that one record plus all the series and files etc which belong in that collection.

This search allows you to build up criteria in order to perform a very specific search.
Clicking on Browse
beside each box will give you a complete list of all the terms available for that field. Double click on a term to load it into your search.
You can search on the contents of only one box, or you can build up your search criteria using several boxes. If you are using more than one box, use the small 'and, or' boxes to tell the database how you want it to search. For example, adding "Foundling" to the Title box, choosing 'and' followed by "A/FH*" in the Reference Code box will search for all records which contain the word Foundling in their title and which also contain the string "A/FH" in their Reference Code; the same text in both Title and Reference Code but separated by 'or' will search for all records containing "Foundling" in the Title field regardless of the contents of Reference Code and also all records containing the Reference Code string "A/FH" regardless of the contents of Title. Searching using 'or' will therefore give you many more results than using 'and'.

The unique reference code assigned to a collection or item. Adding the asterisk (*) wildcard to the end of a reference code will give you all records whose Reference Code begins with that string of characters. For example entering just "LMA/4001" will return only the collection-level record with the reference "LMA/4001". Entering "LMA/4001*" will return that one record plus all the series and files etc which belong in that collection.
Former Reference Code Field
A previous reference assigned to a collection or item. Use this box to search for items or collections previously held by the Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section by their 'MS' number. To do this, enter the MS number in the following format: MS followed by a space followed by the number rounded up to five digits followed by an asterisk. For example if you want to search for MS 325 you would type MS 00325*. The asterisk is a truncation symbol, allowing you to search for all records which begin with MS 325, even if they have an additional sub-number on the end. Many MS numbers were divided into several items, such as MS 325/1, MS 325/2 etc. The asterisk tells the online catalogue to search just for the MS 325 part of the reference and not to exclude from the search any records which have additional information on the end.
The subject category of LMA's collections, eg hospitals, parishes etc. Click in this box to see the full list of classifications and click on the one you want to search across. You will not be able to change this text or add an asterisk. If you wish to clear text out of this box go to "none" at the top of the list.
This contains additional information about a collection or item, for example for a business collection it was explain what types of records are held, production records, financial records etc and will also give the names of any subsidiary companies

Level of Description Field
The archival level of the record. Click in the box to see all levels and click on the one you want. For an explanation of archival levels please see How do Archival Catalogues Work (hyperlink). To clear text out of this box click on "none" at the top of the list.
Use this box to search for altenative record formats, such as sound or film recordings or visual formats such as photographs or prints. Click in the box to see all available options and click on the one you want. To clear text out of this box click on "none" at the top of the list.

Browse by Category Name Field
Click in the box to choose a category to search, then click on "Browse Category Name"
Browse by Collection Title Field
Using this option will give you titles of archival collections. If the title consists of the name of an individual the surname will usually appear first, for example Paul Robeson will appear under "R". Words such as 'A' or 'The' are ignored, for example The Foundling Hospital will appear under "F".
If you see a title which interests you, click on it to be taken into the Collection level record.
