History Card Registration

London Metropolitan Archives contains over 80 kilometres of archives detailing the history of London and Londoners for the last 1000 years. To use the original documents in these collections, you must register for a City of London History Card. The registration process should take little more than five minutes to complete, and a card can be issued to you immediately by one of our staff

Who can register for a History Card?

Anyone over the age of 14 can apply for a History Card.

Why do I need one?

Each individual needs a History Card to gain access to original documents. It also works as your printer credit card should you wish to use the microfilm printers or print anything from the computer terminals. The History Card will enable you to carry out your research more effectively by providing access to enhanced features in our electronic catalogues and ensure you get the most from your visit.

How do I get one?

You can complete the registration form using the computers at London Metropolitan Archives or start your registration up to a month before your visit to London Metropolitan Archives by clicking the button below.

Your details will be held on our system for 30 days before being deleted. During this time you can complete your registration process by bringing two proof of identity documents (one proof of identity and one proof of address) to the Information Point at London Metropolitan Archives where we will validate your application and take a photograph of you for the card and our record.

What documents will I need to register?

Acceptable documents for registration are:

Proof of your identity (must include a valid signature):

Proof of your address

(internet printouts or online statements are not accepted):

Proof for students

If you are aged 14 or over and still at school or college you should bring a letter on headed notepaper, signed by your teacher or tutor, together with some evidence of your age, such as a passport or birth certificate.

How Much Does it Cost?

The History Card is free. When your card expires, return it with two proof of identity documents (one proof of identity and one proof of address - see above) to the Information Point at London Metropolitan Archives and we will issue a free replacement.

I've Lost My History Card

Please note that we charge a £5 administrative replacement fee for lost cards. Please let us know immediately if your card has been stolen.
